Essaouira, Morocco - Africa

"Here it is, the paradise that was once my home: sea and mountains. Some of this remains with one throughout life, even before science, civilisation and consciousness. And perhaps I will return there to die in peace." Driss Chraibi, one of the best-known writers of northern Africa wrote this sentence when speaking of his native country, Morocco...

Situated right on the Atlantic coast, Essaouira has a laid back way of life. The local architecture is set within the old city walls and characterized by attractive whitewashed buildings with colourful shutters. Upon entering the city through four main ‘Babs` or gateways you are met by a maze of narrow cobbled lanes with market stalls selling spices, rugs, leather and jewellery. Shops are open until late in the evening so the town is bustling and takes on a new aura after dark.

Bars and Restaurants

A bowl of couscous or a traditional tagine washed down with a glass of sweet mint tea is the way to discover the flavours of Morocco. If you are looking for something cheap in price and rich in culture head for the cloistered, fish and vegetable souks selling fresh local produce. Here you will be mixing with the locals whilst enjoying some freshly grilled fish or prawns cooked to your liking in the market kitchen.
